![]() Ideally, the play would probably have a more racially diverse cast. The majority of the scenes took place between white, straight characters, except for a few, one with a married lesbian couple and the young men mentioned earlier. The unique stories of some of the relationships are simply fun and charming and allows viewers to understand romance and love from different points of view. It is likeable to a wide range of folks, which I think is why the students chose it. I think part of Love/Sick’s advantage is that it can appeal to many and the cast can be widely diverse. Since this was Western’s student theatre group, all the actors were college students and most of the audience was as well. Our favorite line was, “I can’t be dazzled”. There’s a piece with a young gay couple confessing their feelings, except that one of them has a stress-related disorder that will effect one of his senses, which leads to him missing the confession multiple times. The beginning of the play opens with two strangers meeting in a supermarket (the Supercenter, which gets mentioned multiple times throughout the play) who both have obsessive impulsive disorder, causing them to leap into each other’s arms and immediately begin kissing each other. ![]() While Love/Sick isn’t exactly revolutionary (in fact it might be the opposite), there were people represented in those cliché scenes that I had never encountered before. One New York Times review states that “most of the situations have been mined before in sitcoms and sketch comedies” (Jaworowski). Likewise, other reviews of Love/Sick agree that it’s nothing especially new. ![]() I wouldn’t say that Cariani, as a playwright, brings anything especially new or different to the table in terms of diversity. The play is meant to last around 90 minutes, so there is around ten minutes available for each vignette (Urbanski). His play Love/Sick is a comedy broken into nine different vignettes, each a different little blurb about love, relationships, or marriage. Love/Sick was written by John Cariani, a Broadway actor and playwright and the author of the very popular play Almost Maine. Of course, this is a completely fair assumption to make, especially when you picture the work as “lovesick”, the title just seems to evoke every average romance story you might think of. I had no knowledge of what the play was about and upon bringing this up, my friend guessed, “Probably just a love story.” There was absolutely no excitement in her voice, which might be because she’s not a huge romance person, but also because I’m sure she was imagining a “typical” story between a man and woman.
